Radio Commercials (Spec)
Brief: Client, Grasshopper Coaches, operate a regular coach service from your town to a major city. The company has commissioned you to product a 30-second radio commercial promoting its coach service.
Grasshopper wants to emphasize its low prices, its regular service, and its comfortable coaches. It wants to target occasional travelers.
Title: Running late
Premise: A customer is running late for a doctor’s appointment that took months to schedule. They decided to drive themselves to it even though parking wasn’t guaranteed. They didn’t factor in traffic, parking, and how they were feeling.
Length: 30 seconds
SFX: Waiting room noise (light radio, page-turning sounds of a magazine, sound of phones ringing)
Receptionist (heard over PA system): Harris, appointment for Steve Harris? Please check in at the front desk
SFX: Traffic noise (cars honking – possibly train)
Driver: Why is parking so hard downtown? I’ve gone past Olive five times. This is crazy! It took me three months to book this appointment.
SFX: Waiting room noise (light radio, page-turning sounds of a magazine, phones)
Receptionist: Harris, Steve Harris. You have 15 minutes to check-in.
SFX: Traffic noise
VO: Don’t worry about parking downtown. Book a Grasshopper coach at 555.555.5555 or www.grasshoppercoach.com. Our affordable and comfortable cabs get you to Seattle easily. Some things you just can’t reschedule.
Explanation: The ad (traffic noise and a doctor’s waiting room) was planned to create a sense of tension. With streaming services and television present in most people’s homes, the radio, specifically the car radio, is where we can expect most of the audience to hear this ad. Even if they aren’t in traffic that second – anyone with a car in the northwest knows how bad Seattle traffic can be.
